In migraine attacks, sensory nerves, which innervate the cerebral blood vessels, are activated to antidromically release calcitonin gene-related peptide. They originate from the first branch of the trigeminal nerve that arises from pseudounipolar neurons located in the trigeminal ganglion (TG). Those neurons project onto second order sensory neurons in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) from where a signal is transmitted to the cortex
